Skylight fall protection covers

Skylights bring valuable natural light into a building, but on industrial roofs they also represent one of the most common and most underestimated fragile surfaces. A skylight cover provides permanent skylight protection by creating a strong, impact-resistant barrier over the rooflight, preventing workers from falling through during inspections, maintenance, or cleaning. Whether positioned outside on trapezoidal, standing seam, or flat roofs, skylight fall protection covers ensure that fragile rooflights no longer pose a hidden danger.

Why Fragile Rooflights Are a Major Safety Risk

Across the UK, falls through fragile roofs remain a leading cause of workplace fatalities. HSE data consistently shows that rooflights contribute to a significant proportion of fatal falls, often during routine, low-risk tasks. Many accidents occur when a worker steps backwards without realising a skylight is behind them, slips on a wet surface, or assumes as ages rooflight can bear their weight. These events happen quickly, and in many cases the worker never sees the hazard before falling through.

By placing a skylight protector over every vulnerable rooflight, you eliminate this risk at its source. The cover absorbs impact and distributes the load, transforming a fragile area into a safe, walkable zone that no longer relies on workers recognising or avoiding the hazard.

What Skylight Covers Are and How They Work

A skylight cover is a permanent, mesh-based fall protection system designed to sit over existing rooflights. These systems are manufactured from high-strength galvanised steel and engineered to withstand the weight and force specified in UK roof safety standards. Unlike temporary solutions, skylight fall protection covers remain in place at all times, offering continuous protection without obstructing natural daylight.

The open mesh design is a key advantage. It prevents breakthrough while still allowing sunlight to pass into the building, meaning operations below continue unaffected. With raised and flat panel options available, the covers can be tailored to protect the rooflight itself from impact or simply to prevent a fall-through incident.

Who Needs Skylight Fall Protection?

Any organisation with personnel accessing a roof that contains rooflights or other fragile surfaces has a legal and moral duty to protect their workers. Facilities teams, maintenance contractors, solar installers, HVAC technicians, and cleaning crews frequently work around these hazards, often completing short-duration tasks where risks are underestimated. Installing skylight protectors ensures that all authorised roof access remains safe, even during unplanned or reactive maintenance.

Industrial warehouses, factories, agricultural buildings, utilities, schools and commercial properties all benefit from the assurance that their skylight protection is built-in, visible, and compliant.

Meeting UK Safety Standards and Regulations

Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, employers must take steps to prevent falls wherever reasonably practicable. Skylights are classed as fragile surfaces, meaning they require specific protection. Our skylight fall protection covers are tested to EN 1873:2014 and assessed using the ACR Red Book non-fragility criteria, which replicate the forces applied during a real-world fall. These standards ensure the covers can withstand impact and prevent breakthrough, giving duty-holders confidence that their system meets recognised UK testing benchmarks.

Why Skylight Covers Are Often The Best Solution

There are several approaches to roof safety, but skylight protection offers a direct and reliable method for eliminating one of the roof’s most dangers hazards. Guardrails protect the roof edge but do not address fragile surfaces. Lifeline systems depend on workers clipping in correctly and following procedures. Safety nets reduce injury from a fall but still allow the fall to occur. A skylight cover removed the risk entirely, turning a fragile feature into a load bearing, secures part of the roof.

This simplicity is what makes skylight fall protection covers so effective. The hazard is controlled permanently, without relying on user behaviour, training, or supervision. Once installed, the covers provide peace of mind during every maintenance visit.

A Safer Roof Without Sacrificing Natural Light

One of the biggest concerns when covering rooflights is the potential loss of daylight. Our mesh skylight protectors are designed to maintain the bright, open environment your building depends on. Their raised of flat configuration can be matched to any rooflight layout, and the galvanised steel construction ensures long-term durability in harsh weather conditions. Because the system is modular, repairs, extensions, or adaptations can be carried out quickly and cost-effectively.

Frequently asked questions

Can a horizontal lifeline system protect workers around skylights?

A horizontal lifeline helps arrest a fall, but it does not prevent a worker from breaking through an unprotected skylight. Without a skylight cover or skylight protector in place, the impact can shatter the rooflight, sending debris and tools into the building below. Lifeline rescues from skylight openings are also extremely difficult, which is why a physical skylight fall protection cover is still required.

What is the maximum size available for a skylight cover?

Standard skylight fall protection covers can accommodate widths of up to 2 metres, and the length can be extended as required. This makes them suitable for both small rooflights and long, multi-section roof openings.

What is the widest skylight that can be protected?

For most domed skylights, skylight protectors can cover widths up to 1.8 metres. Trapezoidal and standing-seam roof profiles typically support covers up to 1 metre wide. Metal roof skylight covers can be manufactured in custom sizes to suit larger or non-standard openings.

Do all skylights on a roof need fall protection?

Yes, any skylight that a worker could fall through should be protected with a skylight cover to equivalent system. We recommend conducting a full roof risk assessment to prioritise hazards, but in most scenarios, every skylight requires safety protection.

Are skylight covers designed to be walked on?

No. Skylight fall protection covers are intended to stop a person from falling into the opening, not to support foot traffic. If you need a dedicated walkway system, a solution such as Kee Walk should be used alongside your skylight protection.

How do I know if my skylight is already fall-protection rated?

Many skylights display warning labels such as “Danger: Risk of Fall,” but the absence of a label does not mean the unit is safe to stand on. Most skylights degrade over time dur to UV exposure and cannot withstand the force of a fall. If you are unsure, contact the skylight manufacturer and request written confirmation of its fall rating.

Are internal bars inside a skylight considered fall protection?

No. Internal bars, often referred to as “burglar bars,” are intended to deter intruders, not to absorb the impact of a fall from height. They do not prevent glass or acrylic from breaking, nor do they protect people inside the building from falling debris. They are not a substitute for external skylight fall protection covers.

Do skylight covers require roof penetrations or drilling?

Some skylight protectors, such as tension-clamped systems, are designed specifically to avoid roof penetrations. These covers grip securely around the skylight frame or curb without the need for tek-screws, preserving roof integrity and making installation easier.

Will installing a skylight cover reduce the amount of light entering the building?

Skylight covers are engineered to provide fall protection while maintaining a high level of light transmission. Mesh-style skylight protectors minimise shadowing, allowing natural light to pass through almost unobstructed.

What load rating should a skylight fall protection cover meet?

In industrial environments, skylight covers should withstand at least the force of a person falling onto them. Many systems are tested to meet or exceed UK Working at Height Regulations, providing reassurance that the cover can resist impact without failure.

Can skylight covers be installed on standing seam or trapezoidal roofs?

Yes. Skylight protection systems are available for a wide range of roof types, including standing seam, trapezoidal, composite and metal deck roofs. The fixing method varies depending on the roof profile, ensuring a secure, non-penetrative installation wherever possible.

Are skylight fall protection covers suitable for outdoor use?

Absolutely. Skylight covers are designed for external roof environments, with corrosion-resistant materials such as galvanised steel or aluminium. They withstand weather exposure, UV degradation and temperature fluctuations.

Can I install skylight covers myself?

Installation is straightforward for most roof types, but we recommend using trained personnel, particularly on fragile roofs. Many skylights fall protection systems are modular and lightweight, making installation quick with minimal tools.

Are skylight covers compatible with walkways or guardrails?

Yes. Skylight protection can be used alongside roof walkways, guardrails, or overhead lifeline systems as part of a comprehensive fall protection strategy. Covers focus on preventing falls through rooflights, while guardrails prevent falls from edges.

Do skylight protectors require maintenance?

Minimal maintenance is required. We recommend periodic inspections to ensure the covers remain securely fixed, free from corrosion, and unobstructed by debris.
